Happy Birthday, Samantha!

Yesterday, my princess turned six. When I woke her up by singing "Happy Birthday," she rolled over, smiled, hugged me and said, "I think my fingers got longer, Mommy!" From the moment she was born, she has been a joy. Optimistic, happy, independent, loving, kind, strong and funny.


She slept through the night in the hospital and continued to sleep in 6+ hour stretches throughout infancy. She entertained herself and was easy to soothe. When she got overstimulated, all you had to do was put her down on the floor and walk away. The moment hands stopped touching her, she stopped crying! You could be near her, talk to her, play with her, but don't touch her! At the same time, she was (and still is) snuggly - on her terms.


As a toddler, the phrase "Do it self!" was popular in our house. If you dared help her - in the car, up the stairs, into bed - she would get very upset and have to start all over at the beginning without your help! This was especially difficult when we were in a hurry! But it also meant that she loved to help. She was easily entertained by a sink full of soapy water and some plastic cups to "wash."






 

As she moved into preschool and kindergarten, she discovered her love of learning. She is smart and an eager learner. She has loved school, and can't wait to start first grade in six weeks! (You should have seen her excitement when she saw the school supplies come out at Target!) She taught herself how to write all variations of her name (full name, nicknames, first & last, etc.). She learned how to read in kindergarten, and often read books to the rest of her class.

She is also a very social being.  She has lots of friends in the neighborhood and at school (as evidenced by all the guests at her party).  When she was out of town visiting grandma and grandpa a few weeks ago, the doorbell didn't stop ringing!  "Can Sammie come out to play?"  "Is Sammie home yet?"  I love to see her friendship skills grow as she learns how to be compassionate and inclusive.

Samantha, we are so proud of you.  We thank God every day for sending you to us.  You are our blessing and our joy.  We love you!
