My babies are growing up! WAAAAAHHHHHHH
Last night was Halloween. And our house had no princesses. Nothing girly, frilly or cutesy. And 2 of our 3 children thought they were old enough to trick-or-treat without adult supervision! (Only 1 of them won that argument.)
This year, Christian really wanted this inflatable costume that cost $75 in the catalog. Not happening. But when we found it at Target for only $25, I agreed he could have it. We don't have a name for him. He alternated between sumo wrestler and bounce house (my favorite!). It was hilarious when he tried to run! Sadly, anyone under age 3 thought he was the most terrifying creature on the block and instantly burst into tears upon seeing him. Kids between 3 and 6 wanted to punch and poke him, and kids older than that (and adults) wanted to hug him!
He really wanted to trick-or-treat without adult supervision this year. I don't think I was allowed to do that until I was too old to trick-or-treat! But he is very responsible, and we don't chaperone him when he is playing with his friends in the neighborhood on non-Halloween nights. The friends he went with are in 5th and 6th grade, we know them well and know their parents, so we trusted the group. We set clear boundaries and sent him with my cell phone. He arrived home before curfew with a huge haul!
Samantha decided to be a vampire this year. She spent a lot of time thinking through her options and narrowed the choices down to vampire, zombie and mummy. In the end, she liked vampire the best. She modeled herself after Monster High, which is a TV show that we have never seen. From the toys in Target, it looks like a punk rocker version of Bratz (which are an annoying version of Barbie). She definitely went for the glamorous scary vampire, as far away from sweet as she could get.
Alex also wanted to skip the typical little girl costumes this year. She never wavered in her choice. She has wanted to be a witch since early September, and has been practicing her cackley witch laugh for weeks. She wanted green face makeup, but we had a bit of a wardrobe malfunction last night. I used green eyeshadow for her school Halloween party last Friday (super time consuming!), but bought green face paint at Target last weekend. Somehow, though, it disappeared in the intervening days.
Jeff took the girls through the neighborhood. Samantha wanted to go with her friends and no adults, but she's still too young. Alex was the only one who was still EXCITED to go out with Daddy. Boo.
I stayed home and handed out candy. The little girls were very jealous of my luxurious eyelashes.
We estimate that we had close to 100 trick-or-treaters at our house. We went through 3 1/2 GIANT bags of candy, handing out only 1 piece per kid (except to the neighbors that we know really well - they got 2). The baby next door came over to show off his adorable costume - he's 4 months old and dressed as a pea pod. We were the only house that he trick-or-treated to. And he cried uncontrollably when I took him from his daddy. I guess I don't have the baby touch anymore.
There is so much candy in our house right now. We let each kid have 2 pieces of candy before bed last night, plus one after school today. We've all agreed that they will be turning most of their haul in to the dentist tomorrow, but we still have to define "most." Our dentist is giving 2 raffle tickets per pound of candy, and the drawing is for one of three $50 gift cards. Christian is convinced that he's going to win! He's saving up for an iPod Touch, so $50 would be a nice addition.
